University Life supports the successes of Penn students in and out of the classroom, on campus and across the world.
Career Services helps students define their career goals and learn how to achieve them. The office helps students and alumni obtain permanent and short-term career-related employment and graduate and professional school admission through counseling sessions, workshops, alumni networks, a large career resource library and on-line information. Career Services also establishes and promotes contact between employers, graduate/professional schools, and the University; and hosts employer interviews through the on-campus recruiting program.
The Weingarten Learning Resources Center provides academic support and accommodations for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The center includes two offices: the Office of Learning Resources and the Office of Student Disabilities Services. The professional staff of both offices collaborates with University faculty, professional staff, and administrators to ensure that students receive comprehensive services that enhance their learning experiences and intellectual development at Penn. All services and programs are free and confidential.
The Office of Learning Resources (OLR) provides professional instruction in university relevant skills such as academic reading, writing, study strategies, and time management to the Penn student community.
The Office of Student Disabilities Services (SDS) provides comprehensive, professional services and programs for students who self-identify with disabilities to ensure equal academic opportunities and participation in University-sponsored programs. Professional staff evaluate current documentation, determine individual students' eligibility according to program guidelines, and determine reasonable accommodations for all qualified students with documented disabilities on a case-by-case basis, including academic adjustments, e-text, accessible campus housing, and transportation and parking. SDS also coordinates auxiliary aids and services such as sign language interpreters and Computer Aided Realtime Translation (CART) reporters, as well as the loan of equipment and assistive technologies.
The Tutoring Center provides tutoring, training, and access to academic resources for undergraduate students, which enhances academic performance and contributes to student success and achievement at Penn in pursuit of becoming eminent leaders in a chosen field of study. Tutorial services are provided by undergraduate peer and graduate student tutors for core and introductory courses.
PENNCAP (Pennsylvania College Achievement Program) provides a comprehensive set of services to support success for approximately 500 academically talented students, many from low income, first-generation to college backgrounds, during their entire undergraduate careers at Penn. A professional staff provides counseling, academic support, advocacy, technology resources, financial support, cultural enrichment, and assistance in developing meaningful personal, professional and educational goals.
The McNair Scholars program provides research-training and scholarly experiences to high-achieving Penn undergraduates who are first-generation, low-income, or underrepresented in various academic disciplines. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the McNair Scholars Program diversifies the academy by increasing access to Ph.D. attainment for those groups underrepresented in higher education faculty positions.
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF) at Penn provides a small cohort of extraordinary Humanities and Social Sciences undergraduates with an array of programming services. Students selected as Fellows are matched with a faculty mentor who serves as a role model and research advisor. Under the mentor's guidance, Fellows are encouraged to discover an intellectual identity as they begin the process of becoming scholars and teachers. Fellows receive benefits including paid national and international summer research internships, research support during the academic year, book stipends, access to disciplinary conferences, and other opportunities.
