Library / Information Science
Resources for Students Considering Graduate and Professional School

Librarians were once considered members of an unexciting if predictable profession, dedicated primarily to the Dewey-Decimal and Library of Congress systems. Over the past two decades, however, librarians have had access to a dramatically expanded tool kit for managing information and can be found applying their sophisticated skills in a broad range of institutional settings, public, private and non-profit. Largely due to the pervasive role of computer and software technologies in the field, library science has taken on the new rubric of Library and Information Science. A master’s in Library Science (MLS) can open doors to a potentially well-paid and satisfying career for recent college graduates, professionals looking for a career switch, or even Ph.D.’s who wish to sidestep the academic rat race. Librarians and Information Managers can be found in settings as diverse as elementary schools, music or art history archives, government agencies, national parks and museums, law schools, business schools, religious institutions, along with more traditional libraries.

While many institutions offer the MLS degree, it is a good idea to focus on programs accredited by the American Library Association. Interestingly, there are many programs that have numerous online components, and some allow you to complete the entire degree online. The perceived stigma of an online degree that exists in some disciplines does not apply to library science.
