What is a Professional Masters?
Resources for Students Considering Graduate and Professional School

These are multi-disciplinary programs that train individuals in a range of skills necessary for specific careers. Some of them require that you have two to three years work experience in the field before applying. Typically these masters programs last one to two years. Examples are masters in Social Work (with a clinical or administrative focus); Public Administration (for careers in government); Public Policy (for policy making careers in the public or private sector, national or international); Criminology or Criminal Justice (to work in the criminal justice system); Public Health (for careers in public health departments at city, state or federal level, or research organizations, hospitals, etc.); Master of Business Administration, M.B.A. (for business careers in the public or private sector). These degrees are often essential for advancement to mid or upper-level positions in these fields.
Occasionally individuals with professional masters in a field will find themselves more interested in the research process or in scholarly work than they were initially and decide to continue to the Ph.D. level. This sometimes happens in such fields as engineering, public health and criminology.
