Community Service Activities at Penn

<back to Pre-Med menu
Given its urban location, Penn offers innumerable opportunities for getting involved in community service projects. It is important for any student interested in the health professions to go beyond the sheltered gates of Penn’s campus and to become active in West Philadelphia. As a health professional, you will be aiming to make a positive mark on the world around you, so as an undergraduate, there is no better way to begin outfitting yourself for this role than by contributing to the betterment of the urban neighborhoods around this university.
Civic House, the main umbrella organization for community service at Penn, maintains an excellent Web site with information on ways to volunteer. Kite and Key and Circle K also provide avenues for public service.
The activities that many pre-health students undertake include:
- Tutoring at inner-city schools
- Providing peer education
- Raising funds for charitable organizations
- Aiding the homeless
- Manning a crisis hotline
- Rehabbing homes through Habitat for Humanity
There are so many ways to give back to the local community—hunt around for those activities that suit your skills and interests. For a list of Penn clubs and organizations, many of which are service-oriented, click here.
