The Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics department provides key pharmacokinetic (PK) information that describes how compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream, distributed to the target organs, metabolized and eliminated from the body. Preclinical Drug Metabolism characterizes compounds with respect to their PK and absorption-distribution-metabolism-excretion (ADME) profiles in mouse, rat, dog and monkey. In addition, numerous in vitro studies are performed with human-derived tissue and enzymes. Pharmacokineticists in Clinical PK/PD work to design and interpret the results of clinical drug trials, with a focus on obtaining and interpreting quantitative data on the time course of drug concentrations within the body in order to correlate these concentrations with drug effects.
