Nursing Career Plans and Salary Survey Report
2002-2003 Graduates

Each year Career Services surveys graduates of the School of Nursing to identify their post-graduation plans. This report summarizes information reported by the December 2002, May 2003 and August 2003 graduates who responded to the survey.

Salary Information

Salaries for the twenty-six (26) respondents who reported them ranged from $40,000 to $68,400 with an average of $54,343.  This represents an 8% increase over the 2002 salary average of $49,845, which was a small increase over the 2001 average of $40,046. Some graduates reported receiving financial incentives like bonuses, additional pay for shift differentials, relocation assistance and support for graduate education. Nursing salaries are consistently among the highest of all undergraduate salaries at the University.

Eight (8) respondents reported employment in Pennsylvania. The salaries reported in Pennsylvania ranged from $45,000 to $51,000 with an average of $47,750.  The average salary in Pennsylvania increased slightly over last year’s average of $45,475.

Eight (8) respondents reported employment in New York. The salaries in New York ranged from $59,000 to $68,000 with an average of $62,125.  The average salary in New York represents a slight increase over last year’s average of $60,102.

Geographic Information

As the chart below indicates, twenty-six (26) of the full-time respondents indicated the location of their employment.  Respondents accepted employment in seven (7) states, compared to nine (7) in 2002.

Of the one hundred thirty-nine (139) Master of Science in Nursing graduates, fifty-five (55) returned surveys which represents a 40% rate of return. The respondents reported their plans upon graduation as follows:

This year, MSN graduates reported strong numbers in full and part-time employment.  At the time of the survey ninety-three percent (93 %) of the master's respondents had secured full-time (90%) or part-time (10%) employment.

2002-2003 Salary Information

Forty-two (42) respondents reported salaries which ranged from $33,000 to $82,000 with an overall average of $65,114. Salaries for new full-time positions ranged from $33,000 to $82,000 with an average of $64,995.  Salaries of respondents who continued their current employment ranged from $33,000 to $70,000 and averaged $54,333.

Salary differences may be observed by state.  In Pennsylvania, MSN salaries (33) ranged from $33,000-$82,000 with an average of $65,707.  In New Jersey, salaries (5) ranged from $40,000-$80,000 with an average of $61,750.

Fifty-one (51) of the MSN’s working full-time and part-time reported locations.

MSN graduates selected positions in fourteen (10) states and Singapore.  While 65% of the respondents accepted employment in Pennsylvania (33), five (5) graduates, or 10%, accepted positions in New Jersey. Two graduates are in New York, Tennessee, and Texas.  Five additional states and Singapore welcomed at least one of our graduates; the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Singapore each received a graduate (11%).
