Fundamentals of the Engineering (FE) Exam
Critical Dates and Details
Minimum Education Required: Junior year in an engineering curriculum (Engineering degree from a school accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-ABET).
Penn Engineering programs accredited by ABET as of October 1, 2007:
- Bioengineering (BS)
- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (BSE)
- Computer Science (BSE)
- Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (BSE)
- Electrical Engineering (BSE)
- Materials Science Engineering (BSE)
- Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (BS)
- Systems Science and Engineering (BSE)
Required Experience: Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program (see above). Engineering students who have completed two years of an approved program may sit for the exam but cannot receive an EIT certificate until proof of education is provided.

Registering for the Exam in Pennsylvania: A completed scheduling form (attached) and $175 certified check or money order must be mailed to Engineering Examination Services/PA ENG by the postmark deadline of:
- December 1 for the April examination
- July 1 for the October examination

Taking the Exam:
- 8-hour closed book exam – 8:00 am to 5:30 pm (one hour break between morning and afternoon sessions)
- The FE exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions. During the morning session, all examinees take a general exam common to all disciplines. During the afternoon session, examinees can opt to take a general exam or a discipline-specific (chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, or mechanical) exam. See exam specifications for more details.
- Testing location in PA will be assigned
Only the models listed below may be used during the 2008 examinations:
- Hewlett Packard HP33s and HP35s
- All Casio FX-115 models
- All Texas Instruments TI-30X and TI-36X models
