Meet Brandon Malet
Your Penn major/year of graduation:
Materials Science & Engineering / 2007
What are you doing after graduation?
Working full-time for Lockheed Martin’s seed nanotechnology division in Baltimore Maryland.
What is the one piece of advice you have for underclassmen about deciding on a career or job?
My one piece of advice for future underclassmen deciding on a career is to really understand your strengths and your unique value that the other candidates can’t compete with you. Hone in on those job opportunities that play to those strengths.
Did you have an internship with the organization that you will be working for full-time?
No
What influenced your decision for your post graduation plans?
I’m ready to join the work force – I may go back to grad school in a few years.
What do you think made you most marketable as a candidate for the position for which you were hired?
I am an MSE major with “nanotechnology” on my resume – this was exactly what they were looking for at Lockheed Martin’s seed-nanotech division.
When did you start looking?
Late September ‘06
How long did it take to find a job?
2-3 months
How did you develop your interviewing skills?
Just through the experience of having a couple interview through on-campus recruiting.
What 1 or 2 interview questions surprised you?
“What is materials science, and how are those skills (and engineering skills in general) beneficial for the workplace?”
What is the one thing you wish you knew as an undergraduate at Penn?
There are many jobs that I was not necessarily qualified to apply for, and instead of competing for those jobs – choose a job that plays to your strengths.
