PENN ENGINEERING MENTORING PROGRAM

What is the Penn Engineering Mentoring Program?

The University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science Mentoring Program is a program in its sixth year that pairs second semester freshmen engineering students with alumni mentors. Students will be matched with a mentor during the spring semester of their freshmen year and continue with the program into the fall of their sophomore year. Information sessions will be held in January and students must be present at a session in order to apply for the program.

Students will complete an application and select three choices for mentors from the on-line mentor database. Once students are matched with a mentor, they will attend a program orientation session. The students will meet their mentors in a mutually convenient location during spring break of their freshmen year and/or over the student’s summer break. Students are expected to continue meeting and corresponding with their mentor into the fall of the student’s sophomore year. A student-mentor event will take place during the fall semester.

Possible activities to the mentor-student relationship include (based on past experiences):

  • Meeting for lunch
  • Touring the mentor’s company
  • Spending a day shadowing the mentor
  • Email/Phone communication
What are the benefits of having a mentor?

The mentor-student relationship encourages the educational and personal growth of the student by:

  • Providing exposure to and expanding students’ perceptions of a career field.
And
  • Offering personal and professional career guidance.

What is expected of the mentee and mentor?

The mentee is expected to initiate and maintain contact with the mentor following the match process. At the end of the fall, both participants must complete and return an evaluation form to the Career Services Office.

How do I become a student mentee?

To be paired with a mentor, you must attend one of the information sessions. E-mails will be sent to our freshmen list advertising these sessions. You can start submitting your application on Friday, January 23rd, 2009 and must hand-in a completed application to the Engineering Desk in Career Services by the deadline: Monday, February 2nd, 2009.
