Supervision
For Students in the School of Social Policy and Practice
While license requirements vary by state, most states require a specific number of hours of supervision. According to the Association of Social Work Boards, currently licensed professionals must perform supervision. Records of the hours and styles of supervision must be maintained. For further information on record keeping, please refer to the section on documentation.
When seeking a position that requires supervision, it is helpful to search for LSW or LCSW positions. Proceed to search for entry level/non-supervisory social work or counseling positions at the same organizations. Other key titles include clinical supervisor, clinical manager, clinician, clinical social worker.
Any employer who has licensed professionals has the potential to offer supervision but MANY workplaces do not have the resources or number of licensed professionals to provide adequate supervision. We recommend that you inquire about supervision before accepting a position (Will I have the opportunity for regular supervision by a licensed professional? How much? How often?)
Social workers can join the PA Society for Clinical Social Work , which has a list of licensed clinicians who can be hired as independent supervisors. For further information, please visit: http://www.pscsw.org/stud.asp. Other states also offer supervision programs through their societies for clinical social work. If you are seeking supervision in another state, please go to the Clinical Social Work Federation’s website (http://www.cswf.org/). The Clinical Social Work Federation is comprised of member state societies. Please check with your state’s regulating board to ensure that this arrangement meets the requirements for supervision.
