School of Social Work Career Plans and Salary Survey Report
2004-2005 Graduates

Each year Career Services surveys graduates of the Graduate School of Social Work to identify their post-graduation plans. This report summarizes information reported by the December 2003, May 2004 and August 2004 graduates who responded to the survey.  Despite a restricted job market due to funding cuts, changes in the health-care and welfare systems as well as traumatic national events during this school year, most respondents who reported employment accepted positions that made direct use of their professional training.

 

School of Social Work Graduates

A total of thirty-eight (38) graduates from the School of Social Work returned surveys. Thirty-six (36) of those graduates obtained as MSW, while the remaining two (2) recieved Ph.D.s.

We did not recieve enough relevant information regarding employment from the Ph.D students, so their information is not reflected in the statistics below.

Of the thirty-eight (38) MSW graduates who returned surveys, all reported their post-graduation plans. Master of Social Work graduates reported their plans upon graduation as follows:

Of the thirty-seven (37) respondents who reported work addresses for full-time or part-time positions, thirty-five (35) graduates (95%) are employed in the northeastern states.  The exact breakdown for this year is noted below.

TYPES OF POSITIONS ACCEPTED BY MSW RESPONDENTS

The University of Pennsylvania has joined a national effort among schools of social work, to adopt a more uniform survey in hopes of receiving a more comprehensive picture of where Social Workers go upon graduation.  Below you will find the 2003-2004 categories and statistics, as well as the previous job categories and statistics.

 

2003-2004 Categories

Blend of Caste Management and Clinical Practice (50% of each) positions were accepted by 19% (7) of graduates.

Assessment, Placement Plan, Crisis intervention positions were accepted by 2% (1) of graduates this year.

Case Management positions were accepted by 30% (11) of graduates this year.

Clinical Practice positions were accepted by 8% (3) of gradautes this year.

Community Development poisitons were accepted by 2% (1) of graduates this year.

Fundraising positions were accepted by 2% (1) of graduates this year.

Management/Administration positions were accepted by 8% (3) of graduates this year.

Policy positions were accepted by 5% (2) of graduates this year.

Research positions were accepted by 8% (3) of graduates this year.

Program Development positions were accepted by 2% (1) of the graduates this year.

8% (2) of this year's graduates reported taking Other positions.
