This workshop explores a model of social change developed by long-time social justice educators Bill Moyer and George Lakey. Participants will reflect on their identity as social change agents and discuss ways that students involved in community service, activism, organizing, and advocacy can enhance one another’s work.

Brett Mandel is the Executive Director of Philadelphia Forward, a non-profit citizen's organization dedicated to building a constituency for change to promote positive policies for Philadelphia. Previously, he served as Director, Financial and Policy Analysis, in the City of Philadelphia Office of the Controller where he directed the efforts of the Financial and Policy Analysis Unit and oversaw consideration of a wide variety of issue areas relating to municipal governance, budgetary policy, and municipal government operations.

8th ANNUAL SERVE-A-THON

City Year Greater Philadelphia is proud to be involved in the effort to revitalize Murphy Recreation Center, which is located in South Philadelphia. We will be working with the Philadelphia Department of Recreation as a part of their new initiative Operation Clean Start. Clean start is an initiative from the Philadelphia Department of Recreation that is committed to completely renovating recreation facilities so that they may provide better services to youth and community members. Clean start commits generous resources to a variety of Philadelphia recreation centers and unites professional workers and volunteers in making sure that resources used for the public good are safe, inviting, and attractive. This project will be the first for Operation Clean Start in South Philadelphia and will be an important step toward continuing the effort to improve this valuable community resource.

PURPLE RIBBON CAMPAIGN

This year, as part of the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence, Lutheran Settlement House is hosting a festival in Clark Park with a variety of different activities throughout the afternoon.

The Franklin Institute is thrilled to host the 2008 ASTC Conference, where approximately 1900 attendees from around the world will attend workshops and events. ASTC, the Association of Science-Technology Centers, is the premier professional organization for those in the field.  To ensure a successful conference, we will need the support of hundreds of volunteers.  The conference will provide interested participants the chance to support The Franklin Institute and the city of Philadelphia. This is a perfect opportunity for those who cannot commit to long-term volunteering but enjoying working with people and like to be involved. BREAKTHROUGH OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA

Want to give back to the community and work with motivated middle school stduents?  Want to try teaching?  We are looking for volunteers who are responsible, dynamic college and  students with diverse backgrounds, academic interests, ethnicities, and views.  The common trait of our volunteers is a desire to offer academic support and mentoring to middle school students.  They are committed to student empowerment and leadership.  The program offers its volunteers the responsibility and creative freedom to use their skills to affect students' lives in significant ways.
