CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES

Children's Defense Fund (CDF): This organization is a leader in child advocacy, particularly for minority children and those with disabilities. Its site provides information and resources on children's issues, news related to children's well-being and child care, publications, and a site map.

KidsHealth.org: This great-looking animated site created by the medical experts at The Nemours Foundation is devoted to the health of children and teens. It offers up-to-date health and medical information and fun educational features, with sections for Kids, Parents, Professionals, links to related articles, sites.

The Carnegie Corporation: The Carnegie Corporation's comprehensive site includes a detailed description of its grantmaking program and recent grant list for Education and Healthy Development of Children and Youth, focusing on the need for improvement in the education of disadvantaged minority students and the link between educational achievement and healthy development.

The Corporation also has four special initiatives on youth:

  • Carnegie Task Force on Learning in the Primary Grades
  • Starting Points State and Community Partnerships for Young Children
  • Carnegie Task Force on Meeting the Needs of Young Children
  • Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development
Child Welfare League of America (CWLA): The Child Welfare League of America is devoted to the well- being of America 's vulnerable children and their families. Its site features current projects, news and events, action alerts and statistics, agency membership, CWLA publications, and links to member nonprofit organizations and related sources.

Children, Youth and Family Consortium, University of Minnesota (CYFC): The CYF Consortium's Electronic Clearinghouse (CEC) at theUniversity of Minnesota is an electronic bridge to information-   and resources on children, youth and families. You'll find events and activities, an experts' file, a list of CWLA publications, discussion groups, and links to related resources.

America's Promise: The Alliance for Youth

Center for Information Research on Civic Learning Engagement (CIRCLE): The most comprehensive source of information related to the civic and political lives of young people.

National Service Learning Clearinghouse: Supports the service-learning community in higher education, kindergarten through grade twelve, community-based initiatives and tribal programs, as well as all others interested in strengthening schools and communities using service-learning techniques and methodologies. The clearinghouse can assist with materials, references, referrals, and information.

Education Development Center, Inc.

ENVIRONMENT

Wilburforce Foundation Offers information on environmental funding programs, as well as links to other environmental Web sites, including some grantmaking foundations.

Earth Pledge Foundation. Promotes the principles and practices of sustainable development in the fields of art, architecture, community development, agriculture, food, tourism, education, and media. The site includes a newsletter, news of past and current projects, environmental art, adventure gear, and travel offers.

Mott Foundation -- Environment. Supports efforts to achieve a healthy global environment capable of sustaining all forms of life. There is a site- wide search engine, plus details of the foundation's grants initiatives and programs, and links to related sites, publications, and news stories.

National Council for Science and the Environment -- The on-line National Library for the Environment (http://www.cnie.org) contains seven free and very useful information resources:

Hundreds of up-to-date objective, nonpartisan issue reports.

Environmental Education Programs and Resources.

Environmental Laws -- local, state, federal and international.

An in-depth resource on Population-Environment Linkages.

A Virtual Library of Ecology and Biodiversity.

Rockefellar Family Fund. Funding for conservation of natural resources, pollution cleanup, and protection of health affected by the environment.

Environmental "NewsLink". News service with a comprehensive list of links to government agencies. An excellent place to track environmental legislation.

The Environmental Directory: Director for numerous environmental organizations on the web. Everything from Agriculture to wildlife.

HEALTH

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. A huge, well organized site chock- full of news, reports, programs and projects, and links to other resources in the field. There is a library of health- related special reports, annual reports, and a site wide search engine.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. This foundation focuses on health policy, reproductive health, HIV policy, and health and development in South Africa. An information packed site with downloadable reports, news notes, state Medicaid information, and a link library.

MedWeb. Designed to be a "biomedical Internet resource," MedWeb's "Grants and Funding" area offers a comprehensive, well- organized list of links to funding opportunities, libraries, and medical and health organizations.

National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is the federal government's principle biomedical research agency and a terrific online resource for NIH grant and fellowship information, policy changes, and access to the CRISP database. There are links to a contracts/RFP page and an NIH Gopher Directory, the "NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts," and the home pages of NIH Institutes, Centers, and Divisions.

Office of Minority Health Resource Center (OMH-RC). The OMH-RC Web site offers a large amount of easily navigable material, including news releases, online publications, grants announcements, a funding resource guide, news of upcoming events and conferences, links to OMH-RC databases for funding opportunities, organizations, and programs.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Action Without Borders. The group promotes the sharing of ideas and information to encourage free and productive lives. The site offers a directory of nonprofit and volunteering resources, an online system enabling nonprofits and community organizations to post and update information on the Internet; an online library of Resources for Nonprofit Managers; and a global directory of Public Internet Access Points. 

Institute for Global Communications (IGC). The place to learn about IGC's Internet computer networking tools, products and services, designed especially for nonprofit organizations and social justice activists.

IBM Foundation. Aims to combine the company's "technology and people in effective partnerships to bring solutions to the systemic problems that impact society, business, and our quality of life." The site offers recent event notes, program listings, and grant application guidelines.

John and Mary R. Markle Foundation. This site features general information about the Foundation's work to promote lifelong learning through innovative media and communication technology. You'll find financial information, press releases, a listing of grants, grant application guidelines, and electronic mailing list and contact information. Bulletin board and media links to come. 

Benton Foundation. Furthering its mission of demonstrating the value of communication to solve social problems, the Foundation's Web site offers communications technology "best practices"; the Benton Foundation Library; nearly 200 annotated links to nonprofit and telecommunications resources; Universal Service and Universal Access Virtual Library, which supplies papers and policy documents online.

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR). CPSR is a public-interest alliance of computer scientists and others concerned about the impact of computer technology on society.

Technology Tip Sheets for Nonprofits.Tip sheets by a consultant from Coyote Communications to help organizations and individuals reap money-saving, program enhancing benefits from technology, including planning steps for designing a Web site. Most of this material is geared to not-for-profit and public sector organizations.

MISCELLANEOUS

Adaweb. A wonderfully innovative site exhibiting Web based art projects. Anybody interested in digital art should visit this very cool, five-mouse site.

Internet Nonprofit Center: This site includes information about e-mail donors, basic Internet tips, an online newsletter, news notes, workshops, Q's & A's, interviews with organization executives, and a site-wide search engine.

GuideStar. National database of nonprofit organizations. Newletter and databases with information about US nonprofits and charities. Resources for donors, volunteers, and people looking for grants.

HandsNet on the Web. A national nonprofit organization that promotes information sharing, cross-sector collaboration, and advocacy among individuals and organizations working on a broad range of public interest issues. The site includes a network of 5,000+ public interest and human services organizations, news notes and features on budget issues and legislation, links to government sites, "Action Alerts" on pending actions, and forums on topics ranging from children and youth to legal services.

Volunteer Match This site offers a searchable database of opportunities for volunteers by zipcode, as well as an online newsletter, a directory of nonprofits, volunteering tips, and a "Virtual Volunteering" program for those who can contribute time via e-mail/computer.
