The Hispanic/Latino community is growing and now comprises about 20% of the district population. All students in the School District of Philadelphia in grades 3 - 8 and 11 must complete the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment Performance Level Descriptors, or PSSAs. Under the No Child Left Behind Act, public schools in every state are under government scrutiny and must evaluate the progress of the students in their schools. PSSAs determine whether government-mandated standards are being met and identify which schools are actively enabling their students to reach proficiency. The No Child Left Behind Act requires all public schools to make Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, to ensure that all students have the adequate reading and math skills; PSSA scores factor heavily into AYP status, and are thus are considered with the utmost importance in Philadelphia schools. Most WPTP tutors work with students who are preparing for the PSSA’s and the ideal goal for tutoring is to help our tutees improve their test scores. For more information on the PSSAs, please refer to the district website.
