Candlelight Vigil for the Israel/Gaza Conflict Since December 24th there have been over 1000 casualties in the conflict in Gaza and southern Israel. Both the Israelis and Palestinians have mourned unspeakable losses, and continue to live in terror as the normality of their daily lives has been completely shattered. Politics aside, this vigil intends to mourn the many innocent losses that both sides have suffered. Every single casualty is a humanitarian issue that deserves our attention. No matter our religious, political or philosophical views, we should all be able to rally behind the brutality that has ended the lives of many of our fellow human beings. We invite the Penn community to join it on Thursday, January 22nd at 4:30 for a candlelit vigil in honor of the innocent people of Israel and Palestine who have lost their lives. We ask that you take a moment of your time, a second out of your busy day, to consider the gravity of the situation unfolding--the sheer loss of human life. Each of us has our own unique perspective on the issue as it unfolds, but there is a time to rationalize and there is a time to pay homage; let us now shed light on the tragedy of death. The Vigil will include statements by Chaplain Howard (Chaz), Reverend Beverly Dale, Rabi Mike, Sadik Kassim and culminate in a joint speech from students Sam Adelsburg and Besan Abu Joudeh. The event is being put on with the help of a coalition of organizations. This coalition includes the MSA, PRISM, Hillel, PASS, Penn for Palestine, Penn Israel Coalition, Penn Pakistan Society, Christian Association, Greenfield Intercultural Center, Penn ACLU, Women's Center, Middle East Center, South Asia Society, Undergraduate Minorities Council, and many other important organizations. |

On Friday, April 3rd, the Assembly of International Students visited Cathedral of Praise, an after school programs for the kids in West Philadelphia. While there, we put on an international fair for the kids that involved 8 countries such as India, Brazil, China, South Africa and Philippines. Each country had its own booth where those responsible for the booth ran a fun activity pertaining to the culture of the country. For example, we had the Japanese booth teaching the children how to do origami, Bollywood dancing at the Indian booth and learning how to write one’s name in Hieroglyphic at the Egyptian booth. The children not only had a good time with the activities, but they also learnt a little bit about each country. The kids and the volunteers, both enjoyed their time at Cathedral of Praise, and were keen on having similar collaborations in the future. |
