Mission
The mission of the GIC is to serve as an intercultural resource on campus. To this end we promote institution-wide dialogues that raise awareness of the rich traditions and diversity within the Penn community while encouraging students to understand the importance of building a strong intercultural community at Penn.
We offer an array of programs and services including:
- Support for the United Minorities Council, an umbrella organization for 17 student organizations interested in fostering intercultural understanding among Penn students through programs and activities. This Council sponsors Unity Week in the fall and Celebrations of Culture in the spring.
- Programs and Awareness and Cultural Education (PACE) which offers two fall classes and a Spring class designed to foster communication and cross-cultural sensitivity among students at Penn. PACE students facilitate workshops and discussions on a range of topics related to diversity.
- Alliance and Understanding (A&U), a program for students interested in exploring the history of Black and Jewish communities and the historic partnership between Black and Jews in the civil rights era. Our mission is to build mutual respect and further understanding on our campus and in our communities.
- Race Dialogue The mission of this group is to encourage dialogue around race by striving to provide a supportive environment for constructive discussion and to encourage an exploration of the complexity of the issues surrounding race and privilege.
- The Franklin Community, a collaboration between the Greenfield Intercultural Center, College Houses, and Academic Services, the Center for Community Partnerships, Civic House, this program invites upperclass students dedicated to issues of social justice, civic engagement, social entrepreneurship, and intercultural understanding to participate in a student-driven, living-learning experience that will help members become leaders and agents of change as they explore and address fundamental issues in our local and global environment. The program involves a seminar for credit and is housed in Stouffer College House.
The GIC has a video and book library, a computer cluster and meeting facilities. For more information regarding our services, programs and our hours of operation, please feel free to contact us at (215) 898-3357 or e-mail us!
