Mission: To have the members of the Cipactli Latino Honor Society at the University of Pennsylvania serve as mentors to Latino high school students at Central High School. Goal: To guide the mentees throughout their high school experience and prepare them for a competitive application process to colleges and universities. Objective: To increase the retention rate of Latino high school students at Central High School and encourage them to remain competitive throughout their high school experience. Significance: Overview: Cipactli in partnership with La Casa Latina provide Latino high school students at Central High School with support and guidance throughout their high school and college application process. At the beginning of each academic year, Cipactli will make an official visit to Central High School to introduce the honor society and program. Each Cipactli member and high school student interested in participating the Mentoring Program will fill out a Mentor Information Sheet in which a pairing process will occur. After each Cipactli member and high school student are paired, a mentor-mentee relationship will begin. The Mentoring Program will incorporate both academic and social events. The academic events will consist of workshops and information session put forth by academic support, admissions, financial aid, and the likes. Cipactli plans to seek a relationship from each department that offers such academic support. As for social events, Cipactli members and participating high school students will be attending athletics and performing arts events. The majority of the events will occur at a designated location near Central High and over the weekends. While such a plan will require commitment from all parties, the weekends will make the events more likely in terms of coordinating participants’ schedules. We will schedule events/meetings every three weeks, alternating from academic to social events. Asides from academic and social events, the mentor will serve as the mentee’s personal supporter throughout the program. To foster the mentor/mentee aspect of the program, both parties will exchange letters on a weekly basis. That is, a mentor will write a letter to the mentee one week and then the mentee will respond the following week and vice versa. Therefore, each party will exchange letters on a bi-weekly period. In making sure that letters are exchanged, the head of the Mentoring Program will travel to Central High at the end of every week for letter delivery or pick-up (unless another viable solution is met). We hope that by providing the necessary guidance and support to the Latino high school students at Central High School, the Cipactli Latino Honor Society and Penn will assist the students in a competive high school and college application process. Furthermore, we hope to facilitate the relationship into a feeding mechanism between Latino Central High students and the University of Pennsylvania.
