Community Outreach Program

Mission: To expose Latino high school students to the college atmosphere and encourage them to apply colleges and university

Goal: To introduce the students to the general college application process and help prepare them for their own search for education after high school

Objective: To have students apply to and pursue a degree in higher education

Significance:

By reaching out to high schools in North Philadelphia, we are hoping to introduce Latino high school students to the college application process and have them apply to colleges/universities.

Overview:

The Community Outreach Program was founded by La Casa Latina in partnership with the Latino Coalition. This program that invites local high schools to visit the University of Pennsylvania and learn about the general college application process. The program specifically caters towards high schools out in North Philadelphia, which is a predominantly Latino neighborhood. Latino students at the University of Pennsylvania will serve as role models and guide Latino high school students through their college process. The one-day program consists of attending classes, an information session on the college application process, and a student panel discussion regarding student life in college.

Each semester, the Community Outreach Coordinator contacts at least two schools per semester to come to Penn. The coordinator should contact the school counselors in September and January to begin discussing visiting dates for the school. The counselor should be responsible in gathering students to visit Penn. On the other hand, the coordinator should establish a set of students volunteers to speak at the student panel (this can be done a week or two before the actual visit date).

The visit will be a day-long and will include classes, an information session on college, and a student panel (a possible tour of Penn might be good as well). However, please note that the purpose of the program is to introduce these students to the college atmosphere in GENERAL and not specifically to Penn. The goal is to expose and encourage students to taking the step to applying to colleges.

In addition to the scheduled agenda, each student is to receive a packet called, “An Introduction to the College Process”. This packet will serve as a personal guide book to college.
