Proclaiming Pride: 40 Years of LGBT History at Penn

This exhibit provides a history of the University of Pennsylvania’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and ally community and its connection to the City of Philadelphia. It is arranged chronologically with one large board for each decade denoting the struggles and triumphs of the time.  Each decade includes a timeline highlighting the student groups at the University at the time. The exhibit is part of the Citywide remembrance of the 50th Anniversary of the Annual Reminder Days, which took place in front of Independence Hall ever year on July 4th from 1965 until 1969. Since 1970, it has been superseded by marches in New York City commemorating the Stonewall Riots.  A pamphlet complements the exhibit’s community history with a more detailed history of the LGBT Center and its staff.

Proclaiming Pride can be viewed weekdays from 10am to 5pm at Penn’s LGBT Center (3907 Spruce Street) during the summer. Evening hours will begin in September. The exhibit is located in the Kaplan-Perry Reading Room on the second floor. If you have any questions see the person on duty at the front desk for assistance. The entire LGBT Center is accessible.
