Leadership Intiatives

We strive to encourage programming for identity development, constructive leadership guidance, and the diversification of future opportunities for our students' personal and professional advancement.

Student Group Advising

As advisors to the student groups of Umoja, an umbrella group consisting of 21 black student organizations, and their executive board, Makuu staff work to build a cohort of strong leaders within the black community. The Center staff provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills through retreats, institutes and one-on-one counseling. We also support student groups on program development, implementation and conflict resolution. Makuu provides limited funding for programming and assist in ensuring venue accommodations.

Makuu's programs and advising are also inclusive of graduate and professional students, to this end we work closely with the Black Graduate and Professional Students Assembly (BGAPSA).

Student Support

Makuu's other primary focus is to support the individual student.   Students are welcomed to drop by our office to use our fax, phone, and computers to print out papers or conduct research.   We also have a lounge for studying or resting between classes.

In an effort to support students personally as well as academically, our center is a referral source for other University resources.   In building and sustaining relationships with individual students' we are able to assist them in obtaining opportunities within and outside the University, by writing letters of recommendations for admission into fraternities and sororities, scholarships, internships and employment.

We encourage you to stop in, meet the staff and students who are active on Penn's campus.   Learn about ways to get involved in the Center and student groups.   Engage in stimulating conversation and make new friends. Whether you are an undergrad, graduate or professional student, Makuu is a resource waiting for you!

The Paul Robeson Leadership and Mentoring Program

The Paul Robeson Mentoring and Leadership Program was created to provide first year students with targeted opportunities to engage the University and Philadelphia communities to the fullest extent possible. Select first year undergraduate students are paired with local alumni and upperclassmen mentors. The students and their mentors attend at least two events per semester, including a program orientation.  Ideally, the developed mentor/mentee relationship will continue until the student graduates.
