For the College House Health Liaison Project, here are some examples of events done in the past to help assist you in planning events for your house this year.

Workshop/Project #1 - Starting Over Academically (or “College is Harder Than I Thought”)

  • Issues – time management, recovering from poor first-semester grades, making time for rush and sleep, staying sane, etc.
  • Contacts – Pete Kimchuk, TLRC
  • Freebies – bookstore gift certificates, time mgmt. worksheets
  • Turnout – about 17. I thought this workshop went well, the residents seemed to get a lot out of it. Definitely would like to do it again next year.

Workshop/Project #2 – Ware Health and Wellness Series

  • Issues – staying fit in college, working out, eating healthy, motivation.
  • Contacts – motivational speaker/fitness instructor (Dave Sylvester)
  • Freebies – tons of stuff from EMS, City Sports, bookstore.
  • Turnout – about 20. I was really pleased, we basically got people connected with fitness resources (via SELF magazine). I would like to have done this for longer, but things got slightly crazy at the end of the year. Definitely would like to do it again next year, and bring in a nutritionist as well as participate in local sporting events.

Workshop/Project #3 - Staying Healthy and Not Getting Sick This Semester

  • Issues –how to get treated, how to stay health enough to party.
  • Contacts – Student Health. For this, a staff member made flyers about Student Health and how to get treated and we hung them up all around the house. I would like to do more public education campaigns, involving hand washing, breast/testicular self exams, sexual health, etc.

Workshop/Project #4 - Sexual Health

  • Issues – safe and fun sexual practices, avoiding STDs, how to say no, combating sexual violence.
  • Contacts – FLASH, STAAR
  • Freebies – condoms, sex-shop fun stuff, explicit cakes, etc.
  • Turnout – very few. We didn’t advertise this enough (it was put together slightly at the last minute). I’d like to do it again next year, but just advertise it more.

Workshop/Project #5 - Body Image

  • Issues – how to help a friend, healthy self-perception.
  • Contacts – GUIDE.
  • Turnout – I would have liked to have more people there, but this ended up being a staff training kind of thing, which was nice. I love GUIDE and the message they preach, so I would love to have them come again next year, possibly for staff only, and also do an event for residents.

Workshop/Project #6 - Stress Relief/Massage night– first day of exams

  • Issues – stress relief
  • Contacts – masseuse team
  • Turnout – we’ll see, last semester it went really well, so hopefully it will work out again this time!
