GONORRHEA
- There are about 600,000 new Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections
that occur each year in the United States.
- Men between the ages of 20 to 24 are at the highest risk for
the infection.
- Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae that
is a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucous membranes
of the body. Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact (vaginal,
oral, or anal). This includes penis-to-vagina, penis-to-mouth,
penis-to-anus, mouth-to-vagina, and mouth-to-anus contact.
| Symptoms |
- Infections
among men such as urethritis are symptomatic.
- Commom
sites of infection include the cervix, urethra, rectum,
and Pharynx.
- Symptoms
and signs include a burning sensation when urinating and
a yellowish discharge from the penis.
- Occasionally
men infected with gonorrhea will get painful or swollen
testicles.
- In
males symptoms usually appear 2 to 5 days after the infection,
however, it can take up to 30 days for the symptoms to begin.

| Treatment |

Because patients who have gonorrhea infections frequently
have co-existing chlamydia trachomatis infection dual therapy
is recommended.
- There
are different antibiotics that can be used to treat the
infection, such as, Cefixime, Ciprofloxacin, Ceftriaxone,
or Ciprofloxacin plus Az-ithromycin

| Testing |

The test can be done at Student
Health via a urine sample. An appointment with a provider
is still required; then the patient can give a urine sample
that will be sent to the lab for testing.
