  • An enveloped linear double-stranded DNA virus, transmitted through intimate contact: oral-oral, genital-genital, oral-genital

Symptoms
  • Males: infection may resemble penile ulcers, vesicular lesions occur on the glans penis. Legions erupt into superficial ulcers. These legions are painful and are often associated with a burning sensation, urinary dysfunction, fever, and swelling of lymph nodes in the groin area.
Treatment
  • Acyclovir - taken orally results in partial control of the symptoms and signs of herpes episode. The drug accelerates healing but does not eradicate the infection.
Testing
  • Men would be tested for herpes if they present with symptoms of herpes -- the best way to test for herpes is to take a culture from the sores. A man's first herpes outbreak is usually painful, so they would present with symptoms.
