PennCORP
PennCORP is a pre-orientation program offered to 40 incoming freshmen and sponsored by Civic House, Penn’s hub for student led community service and social advocacy. PennCORP strives to introduce students to the historical, social and political perspectives on the Philadelphia area and highlight the vibrant, culturally rich aspects of the community.
PennCORP introduces students to Philadelphia through community service projects, interactive workshops and reflections, and social activities. More specifically, PennCORP works to stimulate student interest in some of the challenges present in an urban community, with an emphasis on how those issues play a role within the city of Philadelphia. Challenging participants' perceptions of the university and West Philadelphia, while creating a forum for exposure to and discussion about social issues, PennCORP provides a unique and exciting experience for students interested in becoming involved with the local Philadelphia community during their time at Penn.
The program is led by Penn students who were past participants of PennCORP and/or who have served as student leaders in community service and social advocacy activities during their time at Penn.
Selection Process
Each year, we receive more applications for the program than there are spaces available. Participants will be selected based upon a careful review of the applications submitted by the deadline, June 28th, 2011. Each application is reviewed and rated by the staff and student leaders of the program and a consensus is reached. After selections are made, every applicant will be notified of their status by July 8th, 2011. Those invited to participate will need to promptly complete registration forms and submit payment. Students may apply to other pre-orientation programs as well and then decide which program to attend based upon their selection status.
Cost of Program
Each participant is required to pay $275.00. This fee covers transportation, meals, early move-in fees and a T-shirt. Financial aid is available to students with need. Please specify in your application if this is the case.
