Introductions: Meet the Advisory Board
This season, the Student Performing Arts Advisory Board is excited
to introduce four new student members:
Mike Winsten W'11 C'11 is a sophomore from Houston, TX. He is
working towards a dual degree between Wharton and the College. Mike is
currently an undeclared major/concentration in both schools, as he
tries to decide what to do with his life. In the mean time, he serves
as publicity manager for his all-male, all-vegetarian, all-volunteer
fire fighter cappella group, the Pennchants. Building upon these
experiences, Mike spent three months this past summer teaching music
and drama to 6-12 year olds. (While being extremely underpaid.) Mike
feels so lucky to be able to continue his involvement in fine arts for
the rest of his time at Penn.

Alexandra S. Feinson C'11 is a sophmore in the College of Arts
and Sciences. She is most likely going to be a mathematics major.
Extracurricularly, she is a member of Penn Signers Light Opera Company
(Costume MAL, choreographer, performing member), Penn Players
(Community Liaison), Soundworks Tap Factory, and Big brothers/Big
Sisters. She also just produced her first production: the TAC-e Small
Fall collaboration! She comes from Vermont, and the performing arts
community at Penn has been for her the amazing close-knit community
that she was afraid of losing when she moved here from her rural town.

Ria Bharadwaj C'11 writes: "I had never seen snow until I came
to Penn. Actually, snow was just one of the minor things I had never
experienced before coming to college in the Northeast. I hadn't seen
bricks, basements, oak trees, or even houses with porches. I know this
may seem strange but I'm from Miami, Florida and trust me, it's a
completely different world down there. For one thing, as a dancer, I
never had to put on snow boots over jazz shoes like I sometimes do
here in the winter time. But as far as positive experiences go, being
in the Northeast as a performer is a gift, given the sheer volume of
opportunity that exists here. It's like a breath of fresh air to see
the dozens of groups on campus and in the city who promote, encourage
and support the arts in every capacity. Performing arts groups donate
their tickets to special audiences, put on shows for charity
movements, and even manage to go to school in between rehearsals. On,
off or back stage, these students and their sponsors are those
individuals who actively preserve culture in this community and being
a part of that has well enriched my own experience at Penn. If you're
looking for me, I'm usually at PENNaach practice, or at WaWa, or
sometimes, I'll be reading for my Gender & Society major classes. But
wherever I am, I know I'd rather be on stage."

Will Steinberger C'11, of Philadelphia, is an undecided major
in the College. His performing arts experience thus far at Penn
includes Phil in Boys Life (Quadramics, Fall 07); Templeton, Lurvy,
and John Arable in Charlotte's Web (Stimulus Children's Theatre,
Spring 08); director of "The American Dream" by Edward Albee (TAC-e
Collaborative One-Acts Festival, Spring 08); director of the student
playwriting fellowship winner "Margarita" (Front Row Theatre Company,
Spring 08); writer and director of "An Inmate," adapted from a poem by
Elie Weisel, for the Alternative Theatre Festival (iNtuitons, Fall
08); and director of Quills by Doug Wright (iNtuitons, upcoming Fall
08). In addition, he served as a student coordinator for the Platt
Student Performing Arts House "Careers in the Performing Arts
Symposium." Will enjoys, well, most things about student performing
arts at Penn, in particular the regular performance of challenging and
artful work by theatre groups at Penn; it is great to collaborate on
complicated, meaningful work with a group of people who have a sincere
interest in the work.
