Both can be done online. Please go to www.pennstudentagencies.com -->agencies --> bartending, and see the instructions under the "how to register" portion of the page.
In addition, you can pay for the course via credit card, cash, check, PennCash, or Bursar. The PSA Store will accept these payments for the course, and is located at Room 117 Williams Hall, and is open M-F 10AM-6PM.
Do you need a license to bartend?
No. In the state of Pennsylvania, a bartender just has to be 18 years or older! However, owners of establishments that serve alcohol highly recommend and desire that their bartenders have a TIPS certificate, which can be obtained by taking the TIPS course offered.
What is the TIPS Course?
Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) is a nationally recognized alcohol awareness program. It is a course for the education and training for responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Proven effective by third-party studies, TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving. It is highly advisable for all graduate bartenders to enroll in this course in order to get the best jobs in any clubs, restaurants, or bars. It is often required that servers and bartenders come in as a TIPs certified professional. Many venues will not entertain applicants without their TIPs certification.
Do you use real alcohol in the course?
Yes! We teach the course mainly with false liquors to get you accustomed to pouring, mixing, shaking, and general familiarity behind the bar. If you provide proof of age, there will be various points throughout the course where you can practice making a real drink.
We wholly keep in line with the University's undergraduate alcohol policy, the amount of alcohol available at an event cannot exceed a ratio of more than four (4) alcoholic drinks per of-age person [21yrs and above] attending the event. One drink = 12oz. of premium beer (alcohol content of less than 6% by volume) or 4-5oz. of (unfortified) table wine or a standard serving size wine cooler (usually 10oz.). More information can be found at: http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/alcohol/policy2.php
How old do I have to be to bartend in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania you must be 18 to bartend and 21 to drink.
Do you help with job placement?
We have recently begun a formal job placement program! Penn students who opt to take an elective test and score a certain percentage or higher will move on to become employed with PSA. There are regular bartending jobs both on and off campus. When clients seeking bartenders contact us, you can sign up for the job, it's that simple!
Do I have to be a UPenn Student to take the classes?
No, our classes are open to anyone and everyone interested in learning how to bartend. We are located on UPenn's Campus, so we are close to anyone in the greater Philadelphia area.
I'm not sure I want to be a professional bartender, but I'd love to learn more about mixology!
Well then our class is perfect for you. Our price is low enough for people interested in gaining personal knowledge as well as those looking to find employment afterwards.
