For the week of November 8-14, 100 students reported influenza-like illness to Student Health Service. For November 1-7, the number was 111 students.
The cases of influenza-like illness at Penn have been consistent with reports nationally that the illness ranges from mild to severe, and most people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment. Following Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance, Student Health Service tests for the H1N1 virus only in specific circumstances such as patients who are at risk for complications with flu.
Student Health is working closely with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, the Penn Health System, and other public health officials to monitor flu activity in our community.
To help reduce the spread of flu and protect yourself, we urge you to review the health information on this website and in the University’s report – Preparing for Influenza at Penn – which includes specific guidance for students. If you develop symptoms of influenza-like illness, avoid contact with others: stay home from class, work, and public places. Contact us by telephone at 215-746-3535, and we will provide guidance about treatment and answer questions.
