**There are two new vaccine developments we'd like to draw your attention to, Meningitis sero-group B and 9v-HPV (Gardasil 9).
This vaccine provides additional meningitis protection beyond what is provided by the standard MCV4 meningitis vaccine that is already required for all Penn students. The CDC does not advise that all college students get the Meningitis B vaccine, but it can be given to those who request it. The vaccine is given as a series of shots on different dates. SHS will have Meningitis B vaccine, Bexsero in stock. If the immunization series is started prior to coming to campus, students can finish the Bexsero vaccine series here at SHS. Students who need to complete the series with the Trumenba vaccine will be referred to an outside pharmacy, such as Rite Aid or CVS. If you started the Meningitis B series at another office, please bring a note from your provider with the exact date(s) of vaccination, and the brand name of the vaccine (e.g. Bexsero or Trumenba). Because the Meningitis B vaccine is not required, nor advised, for all college students, we cannot guarantee health insurance will cover or reimburse the cost.
UPDATE September 12, 2016: Student Health is out of stock of the Meningitis B vaccine, Bexsero, because it is currently unavailable for purchase from the manufacturer (GSK). If you are due for your second dose of the vaccine or have any questions, please call SHS (215-746-3535) and press option 1 to speak with a nurse. The other Meningitis B vaccine, Trumenba, cannot be used interchangeably with Bexsero and is not carried at SHS.
The FDA approved a new HPV vaccine that covers 9 strains instead of the original 4 strains. SHS will have both 4v-HPV (Gardasil) and 9v-HPV (Gardasil 9) vaccines in stock. The vaccine is given as a series of shots on different dates. If the immunization series is started prior to coming to campus, students can finish the vaccine series here at SHS. If you started the HPV series at another office, please bring a note from your provider with the exact date(s) of vaccination and the full name of the vaccine received (e.g. Gardasil or Gardasil 9). Because the 9v-HPV (Gardasil 9) vaccine is not required, we cannot guarantee health insurance will cover or reimburse the cost.
Payment: The Penn Student Insurance Plan (PSIP) covers the cost of all vaccines required by the University or your program. If you are not on PSIP, the vaccine cost with be billed to your bursar account. You may then submit it for reimbursement to your insurance carrier.
