Penn Student Insurance Requirements For incoming January 2008 students
• Full-time and dissertation students are required to have health insurance.
• You must file your insurance selection on-line by January 31, 2008. Insurance documents sent by fax, email or postal mail will not be processed.
• The Penn Student Insurance Plan (PSIP) is available for all students, as well as dependents.
• Penn employees who have full-time or dissertation student status must make a selection as well.
• Full-time and dissertation-status students who do not file their on-line selection by January 31, 2007 are automatically enrolled in PSIP.
• Dependents (spouses, domestic partners and children) are not automatically enrolled in PSIP. All dependents must be enrolled through the on-line system.
• Study abroad students are not automatically enrolled in PSIP.
• All full-time and dissertation status students are required to provide information about their insurance coverage each year.
Timeline:
• After January 31, 2008 all changes must be must be done in person at the Student Health Insurance Office located in the Penn Tower, 399 south 33 rd street, Lower Level, room 114.
• The deadline to make changes to this enrollment, such as adding or removing dependants, is January 31, 2008.
• Between February 1, 2008 and February 28, 2008, you may withdraw from PSIP without penalty if you provide proof of acceptable alternative coverage.
• Between February 29, 2008 and March 24, 2008, you may withdraw from PSIP with proof of alternative coverage; and administrative fee of $100 will be charged to your student account.
• After March 24, 2008, you will not be allowed to terminate this coverage for any reason
Alternative coverage must meet the following minimum standards:
- Plans must provide coverage for pre-existing conditions
- Plans must provide coverage for both in-patient and out-patient medical care in the Philadelphia area, including routine office visits and diagnostic testing. Emergency only care is not sufficient.
- Plans must provide coverage for both in-patient and out-patient mental health care in the Philadelphia area. Emergency only care is not sufficient.
- Plans must offer a lifetime maximum benefit of at least $500,000 in coverage.
How To File Your Insurance Selection
If you plan to waive the Penn Student Insurance Plan, we suggest that you obtain a copy of your current insurance plan. This will help in the waiver process and may be required in order to show proof of coverage. If you decide to enroll in the Penn Student Insurance Plan, you may download a copy of the Plan Brochure.
You will need to have a PennKey and password to access the PennPortal and the insurance selection system. The PennKey is your link to most of the electronic resources that you will need while here on campus. If you are a first year student, contact your school to find out how to obtain a PennKey and (or visit the PennKey web site.
Go to the PennPortal website. You may log in through the portal at this point, or you may log in after you access the insurance selection page.
Under heading for Health and Welfare, select the second link "Appointments (417-WELL), immunizations, health insurance, clinical fee and more...".
From this page, follow the link to “Health Insurance (Waiver and Enrollment)”. If you did not log into the Portal, you will now be asked for your PennKey and Password. After you submit your PennKey and password, you will proceed to the on-line insurance selection system.
The on-line system will direct you on how to submit your insurance selection. If you need help in the insurance selection process, please contact the Student Health Insurance Office at 215-573-3523. A customer service representative will be happy to provide assistance.
Once you have made and confirmed your selection, any additional changes to your coverage must be processed in person in the Penn Student Insurance Office. Once you have completed your selection, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. PLEASE SAVE THIS E-MAIL, AS THIS WILL BE YOUR CONFIRMATION THAT YOU HAVE VISITED THE SITE.
