HOW TO BECOME A TUTOR

The Tutoring Center offers qualified students excellent pay and flexible hours. Tutors should be willing to work up to six hours per week. Opportunities for promotions to Experienced, Advanced, and Master tutor status are available throughout the academic year for tutors who successfully meet the specific criteria.

Qualified tutors are students with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.  Peer tutors are undergraduate students at Penn who have an overall GPA of 3.25 and a minimum A- in the course they tutor.   In some cases tutors are selected based on an approval by the academic department or school to tutor specific courses.

If you have the qualifications listed above, review the following:
  1. Complete an online Tutor Application and submit.
  2. A staff member will contact you regarding receipt of your application, to schedule an interview, and/ or to attend an information session.   You may be asked to bring with you the appropriate ID to complete the job application process. The I9 and W4 are required of all tutors who have not previously held a position at the University of Pennsylvania.  International students should call the office to ask about required forms.
  3. At the end of the interview or information session, you will be informed of your hiring status. If selected you will be required to complete core tutor training and attend a new tutor training session.  Core tutor training and the new tutor training session must be completed as a prerequisite before tutoring begins.
Extensive tutor recruitment is conducted each Fall semester; however, tutors are hired during the entire academic year.
