Cooper, Robertson & Partners

Our firm's approach to design is drawn from a deep exploration of sites and their inherent possibilities. It is from such a base that resonant and resilient designs emerge, ones that endure over time. In all of our work we seek to wed practicality and professional rigor with art and design, to combine reason and passion. We think regionally with an eye on the uniqueness of a place. We focus on connectivity to ensure the continuity of the community; we are technically grounded so that aspiration can become fruition. There are core values that signify the approach for every assignment at Cooper Robertson. Each of our designs must be:

An extension of place and the public realm. We are good listeners. We learn from the place and the people who will inhabit our work. We do not approach any project with preconceived notions of style. We think beyond the project site to connections with the greater context both physically and culturally.

Environmentally integrated. We aim to eliminate waste and create singularity with natural systems through design. Driven by context, local conditions, and resources, we integrate approaches to energy use, stormwater management, public health, form generation, and material selection to create sustainable environments that perform well.

Resilient. Because the impacts of climate change are already upon us, design needs to be smarter to understand the particular threats in a place and create thoughtful systems that allow for fast recovery when a disaster occurs.

Uniquely beautiful. The results must inspire and bring joy through form, operation, and/or performance. We strive for innovation in every aspect within a project's constraints. To be uniquely beautiful it must be realized, be memorable, and create lasting value.

A contribution of value. The value of a place is both cultural and economic. We create places that bolster community pride, enable new traditions, and elevate the value of a project's context, as well as its address.

Martinez + Johnson Architecture

With a professional working relationship spanning three decades, Gary F Martinez FAIA and Thomas E Johnson FAIA founded Martinez+Johnson Architecture in 1994 to bring their design sensitivities to institutional and cultural projects in urban locations. The 25-architect firm has since established an expertise in three main architectural areas " the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic structures, institutional buildings in urban areas and community settings, and the design and planning of performing arts venues.

Known for a thoughtful design approach toward performing arts facilities, M+J always seeks to develop an understanding of the experience for the patron, the performer, and the operator. The firm looks to the future in their designs, even when the context may be firmly rooted in the past. M+J has had the challenge of designing both new facilities as well as ones for existing performance venues, where flexibility, ease of operation, and high but versatile performance characteristics must be present. Theatrical venues may need to accommodate opera, symphony, chamber music, and a single public speaker in successive performance slots.

Over the past 20 years, M+J has executed more than eighty commissions involving theatres and cultural arts facilities, reopening some of the most significant venues in the country for a varied client base that includes universities, not-for-profits, municipalities, and the largest promoters and presenters of live entertainment in the world. M+J's theatre efforts range from larger venues such as the 3300-seat Kings Theatre in New York, the 6500-seat Sugar Land Performing Arts Center in Texas, and the 3300-seat Peabody Opera House in St Louis, MO to smaller stages for non-for-profit groups and institutions such as the 1000-seat Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, VA, the 800 seat Howard Theatre in Washington DC, and the 1000-seat Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA.

Mississippi State University hired M+J to design the Riley Center for Education and the Performing Arts in Meridian, MS, a project that included the rehabilitation and modernization of the 1000-seat Grand Opera House. The firm was awarded the 2007 Society of College & University Planners national excellence in rehabilitation award for the work completed there. In New Orleans, M+J's worked to restore the Mahalia Jackson Theatre and the Saenger Theatre after Hurricane Katrina devastated both facilities.

Ongoing projects include the designs for the new Maryland Theatre for the Performing Arts, a 1000 seat facility in Annapolis; the refurbishment of the 1392-seat Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA and the planning for historic preservation efforts at the historic Wayzia Cinema in Yangon, Myanmar. This endeavor is through the Fulbright Scholar Program, an international scholarship with an ambitious goal to promote the exchange of information.

With the addition of its New York office in 2010, now under the direction of Stewart Jones AIA, M+J advances its philosophy of a balanced approach between exemplary design, practical solutions, and sound project management in the execution of performing arts buildings. Projects such as the Paper Mill Playhouse Study in Millburn, NJ and the renovation of the Charles Playhouse Theatre in Boston, MA attest to the success of the firms' operational model in which every project receives the attention of at least one Principal as it undertakes and addresses the concerns and needs of its clients and the communities in which its practice occurs.
Metcalfe Architecture & Design, LLC

There are two sides to our architecture and exhibit design practice.  They operate independently, and in combination.

On the architecture side, we focus on social spaces -- residential, commercial and institutional settings that invite interaction and engender happiness in the people who occupy them.

In all of our work, these two ways of seeing converge, to inform and engage one another.  So clients on both sides enjoy the benefit of both disciplines.
