There are a variety of ways in which you can connect with us, and many different resources that you can use to help you during your job search. The following information will detail the types of appointments we offer, and help you to make the most of these meetings by recommending specific ways in which you can be prepared ahead of time.

Career Services works with doctoral students in all schools, with the exceptions of the Law School, the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine and students in the Perelman School of Medicine pursuing only MDs.

Additionally, Career Services works with the following postdoctoral fellows:

  • Current Biomedical postdocs in Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs
  • Current postdocs in Graduate Division of Arts and Sciences
  • Current postdocs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science

Note: We are not able to see research associates or former postdocs, unless they are Penn alumni/ae.

Career Services advisors are available to discuss concerns regarding career planning and job hunting during appointments, walk-ins and mock interviews. Walk-in appointments are 15-minute meetings available on a first-come first-served basis, appointments are half-hour meetings scheduled in advance and mock interviews are one-hour practice sessions designed to sharpen your interviewing skills. Video recording is available for mock interviews upon request.

During walk-in times, advisors are available to answer your questions or review your documents during 15-minute time slots. Given the limited time, you should use walk-in appointments to get answers to specific questions you have, or to have a preliminary review of your job application materials. As it can take a while to read over application materials, the 15-minute walk-in slots do not allow for in-depth reviews of cover letters, CVs, resumes, teaching philosophies, or research statements. If you are looking for a more comprehensive review, or have more complex questions you need answers to, then set up an individual appointment with an advisor.

These times, and the specific advisors who are scheduled to take walk-ins each day, are subject to change. It is best to call ahead to confirm that walk-ins are being held.

NEW FOR 2017: Group Appointments If you would find it helpful to meet with a career advisor as a small group of Penn students/postdocs (maximum of 3 people), then you are welcome to request a group appointment. This might be helpful if you all have very similar questions or experiences you want to talk about, particularly if they relate to networking, interviewing, and other professional communication skills. When calling to make an appointment, please state that this will be a group appointment and whether there will be 2 or 3 people in total. All group members must be eligible to use Career Services.

WANDERING WALK-IN WEDNESDAYS

The last day of Wandering Walk-Ins for the Spring semester will be Wednesday, April 25th. Wandering Walk-Ins are suspended in the summer months.

Our advisors also travel across campus to hold walk-ins every Wednesday from 12 to 2 pm at the three locations listed below through April 25th. The particular advisor holding walk-ins at each location rotates regularly.

We offer many programs on career options, job-hunting, and preparation for academic and post-academic careers. Academic Job Search Handbook
One copy of this complete guide to conducting a job search, including an extensive section on writing curriculum vitae and cover letters, is available to every Penn doctoral student and current postdocs (who have been postdocs for at least one year) for $10. Practice Interview Sessions
You may schedule a video practice interview with a Career Services advisor, who will help you present yourself to employers more effectively. We will record the mock interview, and then playback your answers on the computer so that we can discuss how you did, and how you might use strategies to answer certain types of questions more effectively. Alumni Career Networks
