Civic House is My House: Meet Luis Bravo!

Civic House: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Luis: Hi! My name is Luis Bravo. I am a rising Sophomore studying Sociology and Political Science originally from Laredo, Texas. This summer, I am fortunate enough to be interning at Philadelphia Legal Assistance, a non-profit that provides free legal advice for low income Philadelphians, through Civic House's Community Engagement Internship program. Though this internship is my first interaction with Civic House, I am no stranger to community service. I currently serve as the fundraising chair of Alpha Phi Omega, Penn's service fraternity.

CH: What work or issues does Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) focus on? What has your role as an intern been so far?

Luis: Philadelphia Legal Assistance handles an array of legal issues through their various departments. From housing assistance to public benefits, PLA does its best to aid individuals in as many legal issues as possible. As a legal intern for the family law unit, I aid in drafting court documents, translating various forms to Spanish, interpreting for Spanish speaking clients, and other miscellaneous clerical tasks.

CH: What first sparked your interest in community service and social justice?

Luis: I can't really attribute a specific experience or event as the start of my interest in community service and social justice. Instead, I suppose it has always been something I believed I should do. I believe that if we posses the ability and are capable of aiding others, then it is our responsibility to do so in whatever way we can. I suppose part of this ideology stems from my religious background, but I also have to give credit to my parent's hard work ethic. Since I can remember, they have done everything in their power to help others within their means.

CH: What has been a highlight of your Community Engagement Internship experience thus far?

Luis: Most court battles can take months, even years to reach a conclusion. Working at Philadelphia Legal Assistance has allowed me to observe many cases come to a close. Not only is it exciting to finally learn what the judge will rule and on what grounds, but it also gratifying to see clients happy with the outcome. Working with a dedicated staff that is truly passionate about making a differences would also have to be a notable highlight of this internship experience.
