A Time to Reflect on a Legacy of Community Engagement

November 10, 2018

As the seasons changed and alumni returned to campus during Penn's Homecoming, Civic House celebrated its 20th anniversary with current and former students, staff, faculty, and senior administrators to reflect on our past, present, and future.

Alumni return to Civic House to celebrate the legacy of community engagement they have each advanced during their tenure as student leaders over the years.

On Saturday, November 10th, members of Civic House's community, new and old, mingled in the Living Room and shared stories of the importance of Civic House in their lives, on campus, and in the broader community. Penn Provost Wendell Pritchett and Vice Provost for University Life Dr. Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum participated, offering their perspectives on Civic House's importance in the context of student life, education, and Penn's commitments to civic engagement and the broader community.. Remarks were also offered by Civic House Director David Grossman, Faculty Director Walter Licht, Lara Jung C'19, and Leyla Mocan W'14. Among the themes explored were Civic House's role in connecting students, faculty, staff and community partners in pursuing social justice, and our programs' importance in nurturing students' commitments to their own learning and their developing sense of how they can make a difference in the world.

Civic House gives life to Penn's idea that its students will make a difference locally and globally. Proposed by students, over the years this small house has represented the sustained goals of student advocacy and collaboration with the community. In reaching this milestone, we continue to support learning and engagement, and hope that the success of the past 20 years will persist into making the future possible.

We encourage alumni to remain engaged in a variety of ways:

Share your story with students and alumni about your experiences at Civic House and what you have done since graduation

Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed about program's during our 20th Anniversary celebration and beyond

Offer to become a resource to current students or fellow alumni

Support Civic House through a gift to one of our programs

We look forward to hearing from you, and to staying in touch!
