STAR (Supervision to Aid Reentry) Dinner & Discussion

For the past three years, Stouffer College House has taken residents to visit Judge Restrepo’s chambers to observe the STAR (Supervision to Aid Reentry) program in action. The program's objectives include preventing recidivism, reducing the high rate of violent crime in the City of Philadelphia, and assisting high-risk returning citizens with the multiple social, family, and logistical issues they confront upon their return to society after years in prison. Approximately 30 to 40 participants, divided into two separate courts, attend bimonthly sessions in open court before a judge for 52 weeks Representatives of the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Federal Public Defender's Office, the Probation Office, the Department of Justice Reentry Coordinator, and judges meet for about 90 minutes before each court session to discuss each participant's progress and develop plans to help the participants succeed. Simply put, the program unites all players in the federal justice system to collectively assist those in need and has observed multiple noteworthy accomplishments of its participants.

This event will build on this partnership by inviting members to come talk with residents over dinner, where students can engage in meaningful and extensive discussions around the STAR program and related issues (e.g. criminal justice reform, reentry programs).
